Palmerston Street, Manchester

Bringing family living into an area predominantly made up of flats, bedsits and overcrowded Victorian terraces, this development in Palmerston Street provides homes for affordable rent and shared ownership.

The first phase delivered 33 homes. The scheme is part of wider council plans to regenerate 17 neighbourhoods in east Manchester, an area affected by industrial decline from the early 1970s and subsequently poor health, low educational achievement and crime. The urban-block style of design offers high levels of surveillance over the street, which increases feelings of safety and reduces the potential for anti-social behaviour. An education programme helped residents identify energy-saving ideas.
