As part of the ongoing construction programme at the Girls school the redundant drama studio was transformed into a state of the art computer suite and library fit for the 21st century.

The space was essentially gutted, revealing original features of timber roof trusses and wainscoting, which were retained, refurbished and enhanced as part of the new scheme. This created an harmonious juxtaposition of old and new, regenerating a previously shabby building and space, a philosophy inherent in all of the refurbishment projects undertaken at the school.

A mezzanine floor is inserted into the volume as a plane punctured by free flowing openings to retain the spacious character of the room while providing additional valuable accommodation. A central spiral staircase is incorporated to add physical and visual connections between the two levels.

This scheme embodies in microcosm the approach taken to the larger construction projects undertaken for the school with the introduction of high quality materials and detailing complementing the original Edwardian buildings.

The library was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles in April 2003.
