Both the original school and the new children's centre benefit from their proximity through sharing of services and make a statement visually about their symbiotic relationship; the children from the nursery graduating to the school in due time.
The single storey solution was arrived at due to its sympathetic scale to the surrounding environment and the ease of access to all functions required by its users from the community. The form of the building makes a statement about its separate organisation and identity whilst being simple and cost effective together with allowing visual interest, clerestory windows and a less accessible roof for vandals through high overhanging eaves.
Secure playgrounds to both the nursery and reception class to the south of the building encompass the existing trees and provide a variety of surfaces to stimulate children's play time. Canopies to each childcare area have a dual purpose providing sheltered play areas and solar shading to the glazing.
The simple materials pallet of brick and timber cladding to the walls will bring warmth and a variety of textures to the environment. Overall the project signifies a new beginning and investment in the future of the area through education and training of children and all sections of the community.
