The project involved the creation of a new sports hall and a specialist teaching block within the curtilage of an existing comprehensive school. The sports hall has a new link to the existing gymnasium and changing block which has been configured to allow community use outside school hours. The hall is designed for 4 badminton courts, five-a-side football, cricket practice and netball.

The specialist block provides 2D and 3D art rooms and a science class with a prep area at ground level. Access to these classrooms is via a covered way adjacent to main circulation areas and central concourse. An extra school office was created within the new footprint.

At first floor level an additional dining room adjacent to the existing dining hall has been provided together with an IT room, a catering office and 2 standard classrooms. To avoid the cost of stairs and lifts, the building was designed to sit into an existing cutting linked by bridges to the central concourse and upper terraces.

The design exceeded the client’s original brief providing the school more teaching space and robust structures.
